The many benefits of gaining a VET qualification

In the last ten years, human and community services have been among the fastest growing industries in Australia. Community service workers are finding rewarding careers helping children, families, and the aged. The demand for people who hold qualifications in community service fields continues to grow, and most states report a shortage of qualified individuals to serve in these roles.

As the community services sector grows, a variety of qualifications and training programs have developed. IKON offers four nationally accredited VET qualifications (Counselling, Youth Work, and Mental Health, Alcohol & Other Drugs) that prepare students for a rewarding career in this sector.

These programs provide students with both theoretical and practical skills across of broad range of community service environments. Graduates are qualified to provide counselling, advocacy, program coordination, and supervision.

VET qualifications hold several distinct advantages for people looking to make a difference in their community. A recent study found that professionals who completed VET qualifications felt more well prepared for their position than those with other human services degrees (other than social work). VET qualifications    can greatly increase one’s skill set, job satisfaction, and career opportunities.

For professionals who are already working in the community services field but want to increase their skills and improve job prospects, IKON offers flexible learning and can also formally recognised your existing skills and experience through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Another advantage of an IKON VET qualification is that several of our diplomas create study pathways into further study at Universities in related fields, such as Social Work.  This is a popular pathway for many IKON students who elect to gain credit (of up to 1 year) into their social work degree allowing students whose ultimate goal is to complete a bachelor’s degree to begin earning credits and developing practical skills at IKON.

Whether you are already a working professional in a related field looking to improve your skills, or a new student exploring career options, VET qualifications in Youth Work & Justice, Counselling, or Mental Health, Alcohol & Other Drugs are a strong choice to prepare you to make a difference in your community.
